This is a question we receive pretty frequently because, as noted in this blog post , there are not very many standard terms in the detailing industry. When you step outside the circle of trained detailing professionals, the terminology becomes even more clouded and confusing. We’re here today to clear that up a bit.
What most people have called “buffing” for decades is actually what is paint correction.
This is the process of fixing swirls, small scratches, haziness, fading, oxidation on the surface of a vehicle.

We utilize diverse combinations of pads and compounds to achieve a vehicle’s maximum potential. Luke will never guarantee 100% perfection. This is because to achieve true OEM (original equipment manufacturer) is impossible…and, as a human detailer, he is not perfect. It is usually possible to land somewhere between 70% - 85% OEM. In some cases, we could achieve 90%, if the car is brand new and has less than 50 miles on it.
We have created the graphic below to give a helpful visual in understanding vehicle clear coat and paint layers, as well as the paint correction and ceramic coating processes.
